With technological advances pushing the EV ever forward, auto manufacturers worldwide are competing on an unprecedented scale to make the best EVs on the market. It's why we've led with so much EV news lately – and Nissan is looking to step up their game in a big way.

Tesla is, of course, leading the charge for EV – but MG, BMW, and Toyota are all proving to be worthy competitors.

Recently, the firm announced it would be producing a new series of next-generation batteries for all-new machines by the end of 2029.

This new battery is said to be more powerful, safer, faster to charge, and even cheaper than the lithium-ion batteries currently dominating the EV world.

Most car manufacturers worldwide appear to be focusing on solid-state batteries, as they will replace the main downfalls of the batteries today, i.e., the corrosive liquids within them. Newer battery designs take away the corrosion – and aim to make EV running safer, more sustainable, and more reliable.

For all Nissan is making exciting claims about new EV batteries right now, it’s lagging a little behind other competitors. In fact, Toyota has already revealed its renewed focus on producing cleaner, more reliable solid-state batteries in its new EVs and plans on releasing them between 2027 and 2028.

Volkswagen, too, has made similar statements – so, as close as 2029 may seem, it may already be old news for Nissan if Toyota and Volkswagen do beat it to the punch.

The reason for so much of a delay is, of course, quality and safety control. Nissan has set a five-year benchmark to ensure it produces EV power that ticks all the right boxes. That’s going to mean a lot of testing, and plenty of trial-and-error.

Nissan has so far only revealed that they have found the perfect materials for their unique batteries, which include a metal version of lithium. How that will work in practice and convert into smoother, more reliable EV driving, we will have to wait and see!

Despite Nissan lagging a little on the battery innovation front, the company is still a trailblazer in clean motoring. They did, after all, create the Nissan Leaf as far back as 2010, a template that’s helped inspire some of the most successful electric vehicles since.

It seems to be a long game for Nissan right now – but, it’ll hopefully be worth it. The 2029 EV battery line won’t be restricted to one or two vehicles, for starters. We’re likely to see it in everyday road vehicles and trucks – meaning provided other firms don’t get too innovative in the years to come, the battery revolution might just be Nissan’s for the taking.

Nissan is a name that many motorists feel confident in, meaning regardless of who wins the “race” to develop the most reliable EV tech by the end of the decade, the firm is unlikely to hit rock bottom any time soon. If you’re something of a Nissan fan, stick with us for more news when we have it.
